California Nature

Catherine’s “California Nature” series began during Covid when hiking became a mental health necessity. These large-scale tapestry-style paintings serve as ecological archives that allow the viewer to enter a disappearing world. California's climate challenges, wildfires, droughts, deforestation, sea-level rise, and biodiversity loss are more than distant scientific or political issues, but most importantly concern the emotional, spiritual and psychological. These paintings range from depicting the sense of home seen through redwoods and ferns to the heartbreaking loss due to countless wildfires and severe drought.

Catherine believes that every person can and must foster a relationship with nature, becoming responsibile land stewards and protectors of the environment. With indigenous history, knowledge and Land Back, global climate change solutions must center perspectives of Indigenous groups and the Global South.
